CONTEMPORARY BRITISH PAINTER AND PRINTMAKER
Iona Stern lives and works in Ealing, West London. She studied Art and Design at Canterbury College of Art before joining Dorland Advertising as an Art Director. After a long career as an art / creative director she left the commercial world to follow a more personal artistic path. Over the last couple of years Iona has fallen in love with silkscreen printing and has developed her own style by combining expressive painterly marks with more traditional print techniques.
“As a colourist, I felt that the screen opened up a whole new world – enabling me to layer in thin luminous colour. Every mark is on show – nothing can be hidden – it’s like putting your soul on paper”.
Iona’s abstract landscapes are Inspired by places she has seen and visited. She draws and paints in situ, but later creates her prints from memory, painting through the open screen, with energy and feeling.
Her figurative work once again starts with drawing and painting from life. She uses the figure as an abstract form, placed within the whole to form a design. She uses her figures combined with stencils, graphics and free mark making. With her joyful use of colour her works convey, life, energy and optimism. She exhibits regularly with Saatchi at The Other Art Fair, London and her work can be seen at galleries in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and in the USA and can be found in private collections.
